Robert Kerman

Robert Kerman Date of birth: 16 December 1947
Alternate Names: Richard Balla , R. Bola , Richard Bola , Gianturo Bolla , R. Bolla , Richard Bolla , Robert Bolla , Richard Bollar , R. Bollo , Richard Bollo , Robert Brown , Robin Hoock , Bob Kerman , Robert Kerns , Robert Kerr , Richard Lair , Harold Monroe , R.Bolla , Neil Ronds , Sam Speed , Martin Spellman .
Bio: Robert Charles Kerman was born on December 16, 1947 in Brooklyn, New York City. His father was a pickle maker and his mother did book-keeping for the family business. He grew up in a in a middle-class Italian-Jewish neighborhood of Bensonhurst, sharing a two-family row house with his aunt and parents.

Kerman first became interested in acting during his freshman year while attending Lafayette High School. During his senor year, he enrolled in a drama class and found another incentive to pursue acting: acting with girls which he pursued relationships with a few of them.

After graduation, Kerman enrolled at Brooklyn College to earn a Bachelor’s Degree and where he acted in over 30 plays the university put on. Kerman recalled that his first year at Brooklyn, he didn’t act for there were a lot of required courses to take before acting came. During his second year, he took acting classes at night school. He also went to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts where he appeared in numerous plays. During his final year at Brooklyn College, Kerman met the chairman of the acting department, Wilson Lehr, who had him audition for the play ‘Look Back in Anger’.

Kerman began acting in many off-Broadway shows in both Brooklyn and Manhattan from local productions of ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’, ‘A View From a Bridge’, ‘Camille’, ‘The Knack’, ‘Joe Egg’, and many comedies, dramas, in lead and supporting parts. Following graduation from Brooklyn College in 1970, Kerman went off on his own to pursue acting. He took odd jobs from a Good Humor ice cream truck vendor, to driving a taxi to support himself since acting did not pay much at all.

Kerman become involved in the underground adult film business in the mid-1970s playing non-sex roles for $100-a-day. He first appeared in performing on-screen sex in 1974 with director Robert Findley’s ‘Anyone But My Husband’ playing the lead role of the snobbish husband of C.J. Laing. Kerman was at first very uncomfortable with the sex, first performing with Susan Sloan as a nude-able babysitter in that film. When producers for the porn films asked Kerman to create a ‘nom de porn’ name for himself, a stamp on a cardboard box of Bolla wine inspired Kerman to create his porn acting name of ‘Richard Bolla’. He later shortened it to ‘R. Bolla’ to lessen people calling him by his Richard nickname of ‘Dick’. He even briefly took the name ‘R.C. Bolla’ for his middle name of Charles, but quickly dropped it.

Kerman’s porn career flourished during the middle and late 1970s, and early 1980s, with him acting in over 100 X-rated, hardcore porn films in lead and supporting parts. His dramatic acting talent made producers cast him in porn films with actual plots and stories which made him a valuable commodity as porn film makers sought to make story-driven feature films that could compete with mainstream movies. Kerman worked for many adult film makers on the east and west coasts ranging from Gerard Damiano, Robert McCallum, Henri Pachard, and other port auteur, performing with such starlets as Seka, Vanessa Del Rio, Jennifer Welles, Ginger Lynn, and Veronica Hart.

Mainstream acting continued to remain Kerman’s true desire and in between porn roles, tried to pursue work in mainstream films. In 1979, Kerman was introduced to Nino Masini, an Italian production manager who was filming a B-movie in New York. Their association led to Kerman appearing in a small part as an air traffic controller in Ruggero Deodato’s The Concorde Affair (1979). Deodato’s then cast him as the lead role in his notorious film Cannibal Holocaust (1980) which was filmed in New York as well as on location in the rain forests of Columbia and Venzueala, which was an interesting experience for him in acting on location and of the Italian film making business.

Afterwards, Kerman was cast by Italian director Umberto Lenzi for another lead role in an jungle cannibal film titled Mangiati Vivi (1980), which he played a rugged adventurer and trail guide which was filmed in Sri Lanka.

Although Kerman wanted to continue working in Europe for Italian film productions, it was not to be. After signing a contract to act, Kerman returned to New York when work did not materialize. He planed to return to Italy, but labor laws prevented him from doing so. For his last Italian film role, a minor part in Umberto Lenzi’s Cannibal Ferox (1981), he could not leave New York City to film any of his scenes.

Kerman resumed his work in the American porn industry until 1984 when he moved with his girlfriend to Los Angeles to break into mainstream acting. His last adult film was Corporate Assets, filmed in 1985, which was a big, production shot on location in the San Fernando Valley. By early 1986, he had more or less quit the adult film business to pursue acting roles in mainstream movies and television. He landed an agent and within three months signed a three-year contract to act. He appeared in five or six television shows in guest star roles, and had small but memorable parts in No Way Out (1987), and Night of the Creeps (1986). Then one day, his female agent fired him for no clear reason and, unwilling to get back in the porn business, Kerman returned to New York where by the early 1990s he dropped out of the acting business altogether, rarely working since.

In 1998, Kerman received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Free Speech Coalition’s annual Night of the Stars, a gala event for the adult film industry. In 2001, the theatrical re-release of Cannibal Holocaust brought Kerman out of his self-imposed retirement to promote the movie in Los Angeles. There, Sam Raimi asked him to audition for a role in the first Spider Man movie where Kerman played a New York tugboat captain in another small but memorable role.

Jerry Butler

Jerry Butler Date of birth: 13 May 1959
Alternate Names: Gerry Butler , John Hamilton , Jerry Rillios , Paul Siederman , Paul Sutton , Arthur West .
Bio: One of the most popular male stars of the 1980’s, Jerry Butler was a blonde-haired hunk whose popularity didn’t stem from his size alone. In fact, Jerry was a fairly normally-endowed young man, but his passionate and caring sexual style quickly caught on with female co-stars and fans alike. His handsome features and more-than-decent acting skills made him one of the most sought-after studs on the 80’s porno circuit, and his performances rarely disappointed.

Jerry was born Jerry Butler in New York City in the late 50’s and led the normal life of a young Jewish guy in the city. He was attending junior college in the late 70’s when he got bitten by the acting bug, and soon he was enrolled in one of the top acting schools in New York. He landed a role in an off-Broadway play that called for him to appear nude onstage, which brought out a bit of the exhibitionist in him.

Soon, he answered an ad in a local paper seeking men for hardcore features. A prodigiously sexual young man, Jerry took the job and soon found himself one of the hottest young talents in the business. Jerry first hit porno screens in 1981, and appeared in over 500 features during his ten-year-plus career. Some of his hottest work can be found in ’10 1/2 Weeks,’ a take-off of the mainstream hit that found him in an obsessive relationship with Barbara Dare. His romping with Heather Hart in ‘God Daughter 3′ and with Kristara Barrington and Keisha in ‘Real Men Eat Keisha’ also stand out.

Jerry released an autobiography called “Raw Talent” in the early 90’s, giving an insider’s account of the hardcore scene. His sometimes brutal honesty angered many in the business, and by 1992 he had left the scene completely. Rumor has it that he worked driving a bus for the handicapped in Staten Island before a recent move to upstate New York. He remains one of the most popular studs of his era.

Mike Horner

Mike Horner Date of birth: 3 February 1955
Alternate Names: Don Ark , Don Durrell , Don Hardin , Don Hart , Mike Horne , Don Horner , Don Miller , Dan Sir , Johnny Wilson .
Bio: Mike’s a mustachioed fun-lover who has enjoyed one of the lengthiest careers ever in front of the hardcore cameras. Known as much for his skill at delivering comedic dialogue as for delivering down and dirty sex, Mike’s considered one of the best actors among all porno studs. That only makes sense, since he’s been studying acting and filmmaking for almost 20 years. Of course, it’s Mike’s ability to perform on cue and on call that’s kept him steadily working for the past couple of decades.

Born on February 3, 1955, Mike spent the bulk of his formative years living in the San Francisco Bay Area. It was while going to college there that Mike found himself drawn into the world of hardcore. He was involved in the local theater scene and was intrigued by the idea of being in a film — any film. Also, he admits that the sex was a big drawing card — “I was a college boy who wanted to get laid and experience life,” he says now. Mike started out shooting short sex loops by the hundreds, often for no more than $40 a scene. Eventually, his hardy talents were recognized by local porners, and Mike made his feature debut in 1979’s ‘Tangerine.’

Mike continued racking up the carnal credits, quickly making a name for himself as a man capable of anything on screen, from white-hot sex to deeply felt dramatics. Of course, it’s Mike’s goofy nerd act that’s most familiar to porno fans — he’s been called the Jerry Lewis of porn for his antics. Still, hardcore remained but a sideline job for Mike while he continued studying at S.F. State and honing his acting in a string of art films. It wasn’t until 1985 that porn became his primary source of income. He moved down to Southern California in 1991 to pursue his carnal career.

Horner has never married, which he partly attributes to his job. Women find it hard to think of a porno stud who’s been in over 1000 videos as “husband material,” as he puts it. In fact, for the bulk of his career Mike admits that the sex was the main thing keeping him interested. The chance to take on gorgeous women that he’d never have in ‘real’ life was just too great to pass up. Now in his forties, Mike is currently trying to get his directing career started again. He spent his own cash on a couple of quite well-received flicks in the mid-90’s, ‘Tangled’ and ‘Dreams of Desire.’ The industry’s drift towards gonzo and away form artistic-type hardcore has made it hard for him to find financing, though.

Still, Horner’s guaranteed himself a place in the hardcore firmament no matter what the future holds for him. Some of his best work can be found in 1993’s ‘Justine,’ for which he won Best Actor and Best Couples Sex Scene nods from AVN. Horner also turns in a great performance in ‘Body & Soul,’ for which he and Ashlyn Gere won a Best Couples Sex Scene award from AVN. In fact, Mike’s won more AVN Best Actor Awards (four) than anyone, and is a member of both the XRCO and AVN Halls of Fame. A hardy stud with a penchant for silliness, Mike Horner’s one of the most recognizable and talented men to ever appear in hardcore.

Paul Thomas

Paul Thomas Date of birth: 17 April 1947
Alternate Names: Judy Blue , Bo Edwards , Cleo Edwards , Russell Ellison , Russel Ellison , Jim Paterson , Paul , Toby Philips , Tory Philips , Toby Phillips , Paul Tanner , P. Thomas , Paul ‘PT’ Thomas , Phil Thomas , Philip Tobias , Phil Tobias , Phillips Tobis , Phil Tobus , Paul Tomas , Phil Toubes , Philip Toubus , Phillip Toubus , Phil Toubus .
Bio: Paul Thomas has lived two lives in the porno business. He was one of the top male performers of the 70’s and 80’s, making a name for himself as a stud who specialized in sensual one-on-ones and plot-driven potboilers. When his performing days ended, Paul moved behind the cameras and became one of the most successful and popular pornmakers in the world. Simply put, Paul Thomas is an icon of American hardcore

Paul was born on April 17, 1947 in Winnetka, Illinois, the son of wealthy parents and the nephew of baked goods queen Sara Lee. He attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, studying political science for a time. Eventually Paul caught the acting bug, though, and moved to New York City to try his luck. His good looks and obvious talent caught the eyes of several producers around town. Soon he was starring in the Broadway production of ‘Hair.’ He landed the role of Peter in the film version of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ in 1973, and soon after moved to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career.

Paul signed with the William Morris Agency and got roles in lots of TV series such as ‘Police Story’ and ‘Mannix.’ He soon tired of the crazed competitiveness of the Hollywood scene, though. It was while appearing in a San Francisco production of the play ‘Beach Blanket Bingo’ in 1974 that Thomas first met porn impresarios the Mitchell Brothers. They convinced him to shoot some hardcore loops for them, and by 1976 he was ready to make his full-fledged porn feature debut in ‘The Autobiography of a Flea.’ A sex film star was born.

Thomas soon grew to love his new field. He liked being a big fish in a small pond, as he put it, and the porn business was much less cutthroat than mainstream Hollywood. Throughout the next several years, Paul established himself as one of the best actors and most reliable sexers in the industry. He worked his magic in a whole host of top-flight porno features including such classics as ‘Desires Within Young Girls,’ ‘Seven Into Snowy’ and ‘Candy Stripers 1.’

Much more of a lover than a down-and-dirty defiler of women, Paul enjoyed off-screen relationships with some of the most gorgeous women in porn, such as Annette Haven, Veronica Hart and Christine Heller. In the early 80’s, Paul entered into a brief marriage with porner Honey Wilder, but that relationship fell apart fairly quickly. Thomas had a reputation as a guy who’d try anything twice, and his wild lifestyle led him to a year-long 1982 prison stay for smuggling cocaine into the country from South America.

Upon his release from prison, Thomas got back into hardcore. He saw that his career opportunities as a stud were limited and decided to move behind the cameras. He began his directing career in 1988, after a stint as the producing partner of Henri Pachard. Thomas’ first directorial effort was ‘RoboFox,’ and he hasn’t looked back since.

Thomas has become one of the most notable porno directors in the business over the past decade or so. While some complain that his films are too plot-driven and not raw enough, Thomas refuses to delve into gonzo-style hysterics. He much prefers porn with a storyline and at least some attempt at acting. Among his most popular works are the entire ‘Brat’ series, ‘Romeo and Juliet,’ and ‘The Masseuse.’

Thomas has won numerous industry awards for his work, including a trio of AVN Best Director nods for his work on 1990’s ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ 1993’s ‘Justine’ and 1996’s ‘Bobby Sox.’ He continues to work in mainstream film, as well, and has directed a string of features for HBO under his real name (Paul Thomas). He also wrote and directed the 1991 softcore hit ‘The Pamela Principle,’ this time under the name Paul Thomas.

Paul Thomas is a deserving member of the AVN and XRCO Halls of Fame. He continues to produce high-end, glossy hardcore features that keep alive the story-driven traditions that he came into the business with. With nearly 200 features under his belt as a director, and almost as many as a performer, Paul’s a true hardcore icon and a man whose name is synonymous with quality eroticism.

Tom Byron

Tom Byron Date of birth: 4 April 1961
Alternate Names: Tom Bryon , Tom Byrom , Tommy Byron , Tom .
Bio: Tom Byron is without a doubt one of the best-known and most prodigious porno studs of all time. He’s seen and done it all in this business, pretty much growing up in front of the porno-viewing public. Tom started off in the industry as a lanky, somewhat geeky young man whose only real claim to hardcore fame was his extra-large love organ. His first feature was 1983’s ‘GVC: Anything Goes 119,’ and he quickly became one of the hardest-working guys in the business. Tom landed lots of roles as young virgins coming of age during this period of his career, capping this era with his performance as the debauched high schooler in 1984’s ‘Kinky Business,’ for which he and Ginger Lynn won an AVN Best Couples Sex Scene Award.

The late 80’s saw Tom undergo something of a metamorphosis, as he grew into a pretty sleazy looking long-haired rocker type. His greasy hair, fresh new tattoos and expanding paunch gave him the look of just what he was off-screen — a struggling wannabe rock star. On screen, though, Tom didn’t miss a beat as his image changed from young virginal geek to sex-crazed roughnut. Tom’s best performance from this era would have to be his AVN Best Actor-winning performance as a ribald rock star in 1991’s ‘Sizzle.’

The mid-90’s saw Tom undergo yet another look and image change, as he chopped his hair off and grew a goatee. He lost his spare tire and emerged as a newly-energized ‘alt.rock’-looking stud. Tom’s on-screen performances got even more torrid and out of control as he steamed his way through the fresh-faced young starlets of the 90’s. He moved behind the camera to direct the hugely popular ‘Cumback Pussy’ series for Elegant Angel, proving himself to be every bit as talented a filmmaker as he is a performer. With appearances in over 1500 features and a reputation as one of the scene’s hottest up-and-coming directors, Tom Byron is a true legend of the porno business. He’s a quite deserving member of the AVN and XRCO Halls of Fame.

Billy Dee

Billy Dee Date of birth: 25 September 1951
Alternate Names: Billy Daniels , Billy De , Billie Dee , Billy Doe , Larry , Obe-Wahn .
Bio: Billy Dee was one of the first of the do-anything, do-anyone second-tier porno studs, a forerunner of the likes of David Hardman and Jake Steed. Billy was a smooth-talking light-skinned black hunk who was one of the coolest, most suave studs of his time. His easy-going nature could put his partners at ease before his prodigious sexual skills took over. Billy was a pretty decent actor as well as being a first-rate cocksman, turning in lots of good comic performances during his lengthy carnal career.

Billy first got into hardcore in 1978 with a small part in ‘The Legend Of Lady Blue.’ He eased his way into the porno scene, not becoming a full-fledged work-a-day stud for a few more years. By the middle of the 1980’s video boom, though, Billy was one of the most in-demand studs around, cranking out steamy video by the yard. One of his best performances was in 1987’s ‘Chocolate C.H.I.P.S.,’ a silly black-themed take-off of the mainstream TV series that really let his comic acting skills shine through. For pure sexual heat, check out Billy’s work with Nikki Knights in ‘Black Magic’ or his torrid tussle with Taija Rae in ‘Doin’ The Harlem Shuffle,’ both of which showcase his attentive and frenetic style.

Billy left the porno scene in early 1990, after appearing in more than 500 features. Rumor had it that he was leaving the business to become a born-again preacher. Recently, Billy’s been spotted selling homemade quilts at Oregon county fairs — quite a departure for one of the 80’s most dependable studs.
